Reflection on Robert Wayne Holsey

Robert Wayne Holsey was executed on 12/9/14. Time of death was 10:50PM, at Jackson State Prison, Jackson, GA.

It was my privilege to work with Robert for the past six months. Although not Catholic, Robert and I prayed the Rosary, shared scripture and joined together in contemplative prayer on numerous occasions.

I also was privileged to meet his mother, sisters, nephews and nieces.

A man with an abundance of faith in God was killed by the state of Georgia.  He certainly is enjoying his place in the House of the Lord.  His faith was unshakeable and he had placed himself in the hands of the Lord until the very end of his human existence.

Why do I share this experience with you?  Simply put, we continue to allow an unbridled emphasis on ending the life of people who have, in the eyes of some, no human dignity.  Our faith teaches us something very different than revenge and steers us in the direction of forgiveness and mercy.

Please contact your Legislators and write to the Governor to express your opposition to the senseless perpetuation of the death penalty in Georgia.  Pray that we soon may join the other 18 states that have abolished the death penalty.  Please also remember to pray for the victims’ families, who are experiencing the loss of a loved one, as well.

God Bless,

Deacon Richard Tolcher
