Friends – unfortunately the State of Georgia is set to execute another person. Travis Hitton is scheduled to die February 17th at 7 PM. He will have an opportunity to present to the Board of Pardons and Paroles on the 16th and we will send along any action steps if requested. We will update you as we learn more but please hold Mr. Hitton, his family and friends and the family and friends of Conway Utterbeck in your prayers.
Prayer Vigil for Travis Hitton
To stand in solidarity with Mr. Hitton and against the death penalty, the Archdiocese has organized a bus trip to head to the vigil at Death Row on the night of February 17th. The details are below. Please join if you can!
4 pm Gathering at Chancery offices
4:15 pm Prayer service
4:30 pm Bus departure
5 pm Stop at Cristo Rey High School
6 pm Arrival at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson
After we undergo a security search by the Department of Corrections officers, we will join the other groups for the prayer vigil. Please note that the vigil is held on the outdoors grounds outside the prison.
We will start heading back to Atlanta at 8 pm. We estimate to be arriving at Cristo Rey High School at 9 pm and reach the Chancery at 9:30 pm.
Please check the weather reports and dress appropriately as this is an outdoor vigil (warm clothes, hats and gloves are suggested). We encourage you to bring a lawn chair as there is no sitting available on the grounds and a small blanket. It is important that you bring your Driver’s License or a state issued ID with you.
The State Board of Pardons and Paroles will meet on the 16 to consider granting Clemency to Travis Hittson. If Clemency is granted, then the execution will be cancelled.
Seating on the bus is limited to 35. Please confirm if you will be participating in the vigil (Imelda Richárd – 404-920-7350 or email@example.com). In your confirmation note, please indicate if you will be coming to the Chancery or to Cristo Rey High School.
