In every part of the world, believers, and their Pastors in particular, should be one in demanding dignified conditions for those in prison, respect for their human rights and above all the abolition of the death penalty, a provision at odds with Christian faith and one that eliminates all hope of forgiveness and rehabilitation.

- Pope Francis, Spes non confundit

What is a Jubilee Year?

As we read in Leviticus, "You shall proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to your own property, each of you to your own family" (Lev 25:10). Observed every 25 or 50 years, jubilee years are a period of mercy, forgiveness, and perhaps most of all, of liberation.

How to Observe the Jubilee Year

Pope Francis identified several "tangible signs of hope" for the Jubilee Year of Hope - one of which is the work to abolish the death penalty.

  1. Contact your state legislators and tell them you oppose the death penalty and would like them to support legislation to abolish it.
  2. Sign our petition to repeal our state death penalty statute.
  3. Talk to your friends and families about the death penalty. Many people do not even know that we still have an active death penalty in Georgia.
